Background of the Study:
Gender inequality remains a critical issue in many sectors, particularly in education, where traditional norms, economic challenges, and socio-cultural factors continue to limit the participation of girls and women in educational opportunities. In Gombe State, Nigeria, although progress has been made in increasing access to education, gender disparities remain prominent, especially in rural areas. The barriers to female education in Gombe are influenced by factors such as early marriage, cultural perceptions about the role of women, economic constraints, and inadequate educational infrastructure (Ibrahim & Hassan, 2023). Gender inequality in education has long-term consequences, not only for the individuals directly affected but also for society as a whole, hindering national development.

Education is universally acknowledged as a fundamental human right and a critical tool for empowering individuals and promoting gender equality (UNESCO, 2024). However, in Gombe, the realization of this right for girls and women is impeded by numerous societal and systemic barriers. This study aims to evaluate the extent of gender inequality in the education sector in Gombe, examine the factors that contribute to these disparities, and propose solutions for promoting gender equity in education.

Statement of the Problem:
Gender inequality in education continues to affect the progress of girls and women in Gombe State. Despite national and international commitments to gender equality in education, many girls are excluded from quality education due to factors such as cultural practices, poverty, and limited access to resources. The persistent gender gap in education in Gombe results in higher dropout rates for girls, lower literacy rates, and fewer women participating in the workforce and civic life. This study seeks to investigate the root causes of gender inequality in education in Gombe and the implications for human rights and socio-economic development in the region.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the extent of gender inequality in the education sector in Gombe, Gombe State.

  2. To identify the socio-cultural and economic factors contributing to gender inequality in education in Gombe.

  3. To recommend policies and strategies to promote gender equality in education in Gombe.

Research Questions:

  1. To what extent does gender inequality persist in the education sector in Gombe, Gombe State?

  2. What socio-cultural and economic factors contribute to gender inequality in education in Gombe?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce gender inequality in education in Gombe?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. There is significant gender inequality in the education sector in Gombe, Gombe State.

  2. Socio-cultural norms and economic factors significantly contribute to gender inequality in education in Gombe.

  3. Implementing policies to reduce early marriage and improve educational infrastructure will reduce gender inequality in education in Gombe.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study will focus on the education sector in Gombe, specifically examining gender inequality within primary and secondary education. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews with students, teachers, and community leaders. Limitations may include resistance to discussing sensitive issues such as early marriage and the potential lack of cooperation from some community members.

  • Gender Inequality: The unequal treatment or perceptions of individuals based on their gender, which often results in disparities in access to opportunities, resources, and rights.

  • Education Sector: The system that includes institutions, policies, and services that provide formal education to children and adults.
